Recirculation or Ducted Extraction? Understanding How Cooker Hoods Work

Choosing a cooker hood is about more than finding one that looks good above your hob. You also need to think about what happens to the cooking air once your hood has captured it. Does it get filtered and returned to the kitchen, or does it travel through ducting and leave the house? These are the two main options you'll come across: recirculation and ducted extraction. The right choice can depend on everything from your kitchen layout and cooking habits to the type of hood you choose. An integrated hood and canopy hood, for example, can approach extraction differently, so understanding how each works can make choosing the right appliance much easier.

What is the difference between recirculation and ducted extraction?

A recirculating cooker hood draws cooking air into the appliance and passes it through filters. The grease filter captures grease and cooking particles, while a carbon or charcoal filter can help reduce cooking odours. The filtered air is then returned to the kitchen.

Recirculation can be a convenient option for an integrated hood because there’s no need to create an external duct route. The hood draws in cooking air, filters it and returns it to the kitchen, allowing the cabinetry to retain its clean, streamlined appearance.
