Why is it called Black Friday?

The term ‘Black Friday’ was originally coined in the 1950’s by American factory owners, in reference to the fact that so many staff members called in sick on this date to extend their holiday weekend. The date eventually became so popular for Christmas shopping the term was then used by the police because of the high volumes of traffic going into city centres. This unofficial start of the shopping season soon caught the attention of big brands and the ‘Black Friday’ as we know it today, was born.

When is Black Friday 2024?

Black Friday traditionally starts on the last Friday in November, the day following Thanksgiving in America. This coincides with the busiest shopping period, when customers are looking for the best deals prior to Christmas. This year Black Friday falls on Friday 29th November 2024.
