Dishwasher Troubleshooting

As with any kitchen appliance, after prolonged use you’re likely to run into some issues. This is of course expected after time. In our dishwasher troubleshooting guide, we’ll discuss some of the common issues that crop up.
The good news is that you can troubleshoot a lot of common dishwasher problems yourself. You can even prevent some altogether with some careful maintenance and treatment. Of course, there are some issues where you will need to seek professional help. If your dishwasher problems keep occurring, it may be more cost effective to replace it. This would only be the case when frequent repairs become more costly than opting for a new appliance. Until then, here are our tips on fixing and preventing some common dishwasher problems.
Why does my dishwasher smell?
A very common problem with dishwashers is that, after prolonged use, they can start to smell bad. Before we explain how to remedy this situation, we have some top prevention tips for you:
Tip One: Clean your filters regularly. This is where food and grease can get trapped. Keeping the filter clean is a quick and simple way to avoid any unpleasant odours.
Tip Two: To keep your dishwasher in tip top condition and to avoid bad odours, we recommend using a dishwasher cleaning solution once a month. Some modern dishwashers will even remind you to do this. So if you see the cleaning alert flashing, your dishwasher is ready for some TLC! To do this, you empty the dishwasher and remove the sticker (not the cap) on your chosen dishwasher cleaner. Place the bottle upside down on the bottom rack of your dishwasher and run a hot cycle. This needs to be 65 °C or above for the best results.
If there is a strong chemical smell, then some plastic may have fallen into the heating element. If so, you need to locate and remove it.
Another possibility is that there’s a chance your drain hose has a kink in it, which is collecting debris. Or that it’s positioned too low. It needs to be above the tailpiece. Clean your drain hose and if the problem still persists, you may need to replace it.
Why isn’t my dishwasher drying effectively?
If your dishwasher isn’t drying dishes properly there are two things to check. The first is how you’re loading the dishwasher. If you are overloading it or not stacking dishes correctly, drying wont be as effective as water and steam cannot move around freely.
The second thing to consider is the amount of rinse aid you’re adding. If you aren’t adding enough rinse aid, this can leave dishes with water droplets all over them. It is especially useful to use the right amount of rinse aid if you’re washing glassware. Rinse aid breaks down the molecules of water which removes the water droplets that can often linger on your crockery.
Why won’t my dishwasher drain?
Left with a puddle of water at the bottom of your machine after each wash? This means the dishwasher isn’t draining properly. There are two main culprits for this.
First, you should check if your filters are blocked. If this is the case, you need to get in there and start unclogging. To prevent this happening in the future, you’ll want to clean your filters regularly.
If the filters are fine, then you need to check your drain hose. Disconnect it and blow through it, this may dislodge any blockages.
The third option is to check your drain valve. Make sure your valve bracket is moving freely. This part may need replacing if it’s not working.
Why isn’t my dishwasher cleaning dishes?
If your dishwasher isn’t cleaning your dishes thoroughly, its time to check your filters. Once you’ve given the filter a proper clean, you can also clean the spray arm. Regularly using dishwasher cleaner on a hot cycle will keep your appliance in tip top condition too. Ensure you are using compatible dishwasher tablets and rinse aid. Top up your dishwasher salt too!
The way you load the dishwasher can affect its performance. Make sure all glasses are securely positioned and facing downwards so the water can reach and thoroughly clean the bottom of the glass. Plates and bowls should be loaded with the dirty side facing inwards for maximum performance. All pots, pans and plates need to have enough of a gap between them for the water to reach every surface.
Tried all the steps we mentioned above, and your dishwasher still isn’t cleaning properly? Then we suggest looking at the drainage hose and water supply.
If that these dishwasher troubleshooting tips still do not solve the issue, then you’ll need to either call in a professional or think about replacing it.
Why is my dishwasher noisy?
If your dishwasher is making more noise than usual then your drain pump could be at fault. Check to see if it is clogged. Another place to check is the spray arm. If you have an integrated dishwasher, check it has been properly fastened to the cabinet. This can be another common culprit for noise.

Why is there limescale on my glasses?
This is a very common problem and is more to do with your water supply than your dishwasher. If you live in a hard water area then your glasses may come out cloudy. You can install a water softener to counteract this. Our friends at AEG also recommend regularly topping up your rinse aid and dishwasher salt. Using dishwasher cleaner on a hot cycle once a month and regular maintenance will help too. Always check the care label on your glassware as some glasses are not suitable for dishwashing.
