The name Smeg is actually an acronym. It stands for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, which refers to the fact Smeg was originally a metal smelting company located in Italy, near the Reggio Emilia region.
Smeg was originally founded by Vittorio Bertazzoni Snr in 1948 and has been owned by the Bertazzoni family for three generations.
Smeg were founded in Guastalla in the Reggio Emilia region of Italy. This area is renowned for its food exports, including Parma ham, Parmesan cheese and Moderna balsamic vinegar. Smeg’s cooking passion combined with their metalwork skills formed the basis of the brand we know and love today.
Arguably, the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Smeg is the retro style FAB range. Their pastel coloured fridge freezers became iconic in the late 1990’s and are still a huge part of the Smeg brand today.
