About

In 1927, American architect John W. Hammes invented the world’s first food waste disposal unit. He spent years perfecting his design and in 1938, he founded the InSinkErator brand. In the 1950’s the product range expanded and in turn, so did the manufacturing facilities. When John Hammes passed away in 1953, his son took over the business and continued his father’s expansion plans. InSinkErator were acquired by global technology firm Emerson in 1968 and shortly after began selling outside of the USA. By 1993 InSinkErator had produced their 50 millionth food waste disposal unit! 2. Turn on the waste disposer before placing any food waste into it

3. Gradually feed food waste in via your sink’s plughole.

What is a food waste disposal unit?

This is a small electrical appliance which is fitted beneath your kitchen sink and connects to your waste water outlet. You feed food waste into your sink’s plughole along with cold water. When the waste disposal unit is in operation, it grinds down food and other waste into fine particles. These particles are then flushed into your waste water system along with the rest of your household waste. The waste water is then taken to a local water treatment plant.
