It never fails, you wear white and you just have to get something on it. Stains are hard to remove, especially from white clothing. With the start of football season, mums will have and influx of dirt and grass stained kits to deal with and you know they’ll want to look their best on match day. We’ve put together a handy guide to help you tackle all those hard to remove stains from grass to wine and everything in between.

Grass Stains

Grass and dirt stains are the bane of every mothers existence. From toddlers to teenagers it never fails, they get dirt, mud and grass on at least one piece of clothing a week. While the dirt can be easily removed, the green stain from grass is a bit more difficult. First thing to do is immediately pretreat the stain with an enzyme containing laundry detergent. You can use liquid or make a paste out of powder and water and pretreat. The next step would be to wash in the hottest wash possible. If you remove the garment and the stain hasn’t gone, repeat the pretreat and wash process before drying. For particularly difficult stains you should soak them in an enzyme containing laundry soap and water bath for a few hours or overnight.

Blood

Blood stains happen often, especially if your children play any sort of sport. Blood is a particularly tough stain to get out but if you act fast your clothes will be as good as new in no time. Most people make the ultimate mistake when removing blood by washing it in warm water. Warm water sets a blood stain. Unlike other stains where you want to wash the article of clothing in the hottest water possible, the opposite can be said for garments with blood stains. First you want to soak the garment in ice cold water for 15 minutes. Rub the stain from behind and then soak for another 15 minutes. It doesn’t hurt to also treat the stain with a stain remover or use bleach in your wash. Then wash as normal and your stain should be gone. If it is particularly large or old you may need to soak overnight.

Coffee

Lid not on tight enough, dribble bit or miss your mouth completely? Coffee stains are routine for those of us that commute to work with our travel mug or local coffee shop throw away cup in hand. Coffee can be tough to remove because of its dark colouring and acidic nature. First you want to soak the stained garment in laundry detergent containing enzymes and cool water, think 2 tablespoons to every 2 litres. Soak the garment for at a very minimum, 30 minutes. If it is an old stain it may need to soak overnight. Once the soaking process is done, treat with a stain remover and wash as normal. Just be sure that the laundry detergent you use also contains enzymes. This is particularly helpful if your coffee contained cream.

Red Wine

It never fails, you’re on a night out and someone dances there way into your elbow and red wine is sent in all directions, usually down the front of you. Red wine is one of the most toughest stains to remove next to mustard and coffee. Here’s a surefire way to remove that rotten stain! Soak the stained clothing in cold water for 30 minutes. Then, treat with a stain remover treatment. Some blogs say that soaking your stained clothing in milk or red wine helps to remove the stain even more, but we haven’t test this. Once the stain has been treated with the stain remover wash the garment with either bleach if it’s white or non-chlorine bleach if it’s coloured.

This stain is a stubborn one. You wouldn’t think something with no colour could ruin a garment as much as oil or grease. Removing this stubborn stain is actually easier than you think. Simple turn the fabric over and place a kitchen towel beneath the stain. Treat the underside of the stain with either a stain remover or a liquid laundry detergent. Rinse with hot water then wash on the hottest wash your machine can handle. This process may need to be repeated depending on the fabric and the water temperature.

Tomato Ketchup or Berries

School uniform shirts tend to be either white or light colours in most cases. Leave it up to the little ones to drip tomato ketchup down their front or wipe their strawberry faces on their sleeves. Voila! You have a hard to remove stain. Removing either of these requires the same steps so it will easy to remember and school uniforms will stay bright and clean. Turn the garment inside out and place a kitchen towel underneath the stain. From the reverse side, treat the stain with either a liquid laundry detergent or a stain remover. Then soak the garment, for 15 minutes, in lukewarm water mixed with liquid laundry detergent if it is coloured or in bleach water if it is white or colour fast. Once done soaking simply rinse and wash as normal.

Stains don’t have to be the bane of your existence. Using some materials you already have at home and even some specialised programmes on your washing machine you’ll say goodbye to those stains in a flash.
